Top 11 tips for a positive attitude!

I think i’ve always (at least MOST of the time) been a very positive person, you know the cup is always half full sort of shiz.

But it wasn’t until I first became ill that I really focused on this. Even if your choice of actions is limited, your choices of attitude are not.



Don’t get me wrong just because I am a positive person doesn’t mean I don’t have struggles, or negative thoughts going through my head. I do. The difference is I try not to let those thoughts take over.



I was alone, I had nothing to do, no energy to do anything even if I could. I had to take a step back from it all, from feeling sorry for myself, to realise that actually there was a plan. Things would work out whatever the end result. There was one point when I was at my worst when I was just thinking, GOD. Where are you. What are you doing. What is the point in this.

And I get that there are people that have way worse problems/illnesses but at that point in time it didn’t feel like it.



The only thing that would help me at this point was my mind-frame, and of course the Big Man up there.

While you may not think it always helps, a positive attitude ALWAYS makes a situation better – you might not realise it but if you had a negative attitude the situation would be far worse than it was before.



I don’t think I realised it until I looked back on this time period, but I changed myself so much, obviously (hopefully?!) for the better. And that is pretty much all down to making sure I have a positive mind-set.

Luckily for you I am going to share some of my top 11 tips for giving yourself this positive mind-frame!




1. Carry an attitude of happiness with you

OK this may seem obvious, or easy but it is a big one. But basically do not wait for external things to make you happy. Be happy and watch how that influences the things that go on around you, there is always a good outcome that comes from any situation.


2. Smile

I don’t think any of us actual realise how little we smile anymore. I know people say you might have a ‘resting b**** face’ but it doesn’t take a lot to turn up the corners of your mouth just a lil bit. Oh and when I say smile I don’t mean any of this fake stuff, smile like you mean it please. PLUS smiling releases endorphin’s and serotonin, also known as the feel good hormones. That can’t be a bad thing.


3. Take some responsibility (or initiative)

Your attitude is your own, that is obvious, but being in charge of it is something completely different. You are responsible for yourself and you create the life around you so CREATE your own happiness.


4. Generate positivity in your brain

Although I can not sing to save my life I love to listen to music. I actually listen to the lyrics in the songs and when you do take the time to listen you might actually be like ‘what the heck am I listening to.’ So many songs have pointless lyrics and can give you a negative attitude even though you might not actually be aware of it. Do yourself a favour and listen to uplifting songs (on my drive to work I always do this!), watch optimistic films or read books with positive messages.


5. Stop complaining!

If you continuously moan it’s a known fact that people will stop wanting to be around you. It is also putting a negative light on a situation, person or place and you probably aren’t offering a solution. Instead look for solutions, put negative thoughts to the back of your mind (or just get rid of them all together and accept what cannot be changed.


6. Become optimistic!

There are two ways you can look at any life situation. You can look at it and find the bad things about it and think ‘why is this happening to me’ OR you can look at it and think ‘what is this trying to teach me?’ I am a firm believer that you can grow or gain something from every situation or challenge.


7. Stop being a reactive person

This is someone who lets others or difficult situations determine how they will feel. Instead become proactive and decide how you are going to feel each moment of the day regardless of what’s going on around you.


8. Watch your words

The expression ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all’ is thrown around and not taken seriously, but actually this is one of the best things to remember. Only use positive words when your talking to others, but also to yourself.


9. Have a purpose

When I was at my illest my purpose for the day might have been to only have 4 sleeps instead of 5 etc etc but when you achieve it the sense of accomplishment will definitely help! Make sure they are realistic purposes!


10. Obsess on the good

The good in yourself, the good in others and the good in your life.


11. Find others with a positive attitude

People say happiness is contagious, and I totally believe this. So when you are down, find yourself someone (I found myself an elephant) with a great attitude and look for an excuse to hang out with them.

  1. Love these tips, I truly believe in smiling to make yourself happy. When I worked in a job I truly hated I smiled and laughed and everyone thought I loved it, and it actually made me feel happier everyday just to put that smile on my face.

  2. These are such great tips. I feel that it’s so important to embrace happiness in your life. There are always a million reasons to remain miserable, but we are responsible for our own attitudes. Love you tip about “smiling” more often. It’s so very true. Great post!

  3. Great post, I too am a great believer in positive mental attitude. I like you, don’t always feel great but with training my brain, I get through these times and usually see the best in most things.

  5. Isn’t it odd that something so simple as a smile on your face can lift your mood & make you feel more positive.
    From rather negative & unapproachable to positive & approachable. Clearly positivity it seems isn’t for everyone but we can only do whats best for us.

  6. What i don’t realize is in reality how you’re now not actually much more well-appreciated than you may be now. You are so intelligent. You already know thus significantly in relation to this matter, made me in my view imagine it from numerous numerous angles. Its like men and women are not involved until it’s one thing to do with Lady gaga! Your own stuffs excellent. At all times maintain it up!
