San Francisco

San Francisco

So our time in San Francisco wasn’t the sweetest, largely due to our ‘hotel’ which definitely tainted our time there. Without going into too much detail let’s just say when we booked it a few months before it was a 3*+ and when we got there it had gone down to a 1-2*, it was in a dodgy area, it smelt, the walls were SO thin sleeping wasn’t really in the equation and there were cockroaches.

If we hadn’t been staying there I think we would have enjoyed our time in San Fran a lot more! That being said we did have an amazing time exploring Alcatraz, fisherman’s wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, the painted ladies, a beach day, and a basketball game!

I wouldn’t normally say going to visit a jail is high on my priority list when I’m exploring a new city but for Alcatraz I’ll make an exception. Not only do you get a audio walking tour of the prison – which is so interesting and eerie at the same time. You can also explore the grounds, buy a souvenir and on our visit there was even a guard that worked there when it was up and running for you to talk to and ask questions at the end of the tour – although I’m not sure he is always there.

Fishermans wharf and Pier 39 were fantastic. We watched seals basking in the sun, Hannah tried a corn dog (but wasn’t sold) we watched street entertainment and of course ate fries. We then continued our walk to Lombard street, started at the bottom and by the time we got to the top we had taken about 5 breaks from all the steps but it was worth it!

Golden Gate Park park is beautiful and so big you could spend the whole day walking around it and still not see it all. We decided to splash out and visiting the Japanese gardens there and bought street food along the way. We continued on to Gold Gate Bridge, which we thought would be easy to reach but 45 minutes later we were still walking towards it with the feeling it wasn’t getting any closer. At least it was a good view! We finally arrived just as the sun was setting which was a beautiful backdrop. Despite the 1 and a half hour walk home and walking more steps then I think I’ve ever walked we had a great day.

Regardless of the fact that the official basketball season hadn’t quite begun we managed to get tickets to a pre season game at the Oracle Arena! If you go to America and can get tickets to  basketball match you HAVE to go. The atmosphere was insane and it’s an easy game to understand. What could go wrong?!

What other parts of San Fran do you love? Comment below I can’t wait to hear them.
